The Muscovy Mama Who Jumped the Fence

A Muscovy mama jumped the fence with her ducklings and set up camp down the hill.

Remember how I said, “Muscovys are great mamas,” but also said that ducklings are nature’s hors d’oeuvres? Well, here is a great example. This mama hatched seven ducklings and quickly, brilliantly, decided the backyard fray was not for her. So like everyone else around here, she decided to jump the fence and raise them down the hill.

She packed up her brood and took them to a less populated part of the farm. I monitor them on my daily walk with Boomer. She can often be found at the little water hole that Judah and Jedidiah bicker over when it’s hot and they don’t want to walk back to the creek or up to their trough.

That happens to be near where Boomer plays with his livestock ball. Whenever he goes charging after it, she gathers the ducklings and marches them to the barn.

At last count she’s still got five. On this farm, that makes her a star. She’s out from underfoot of the livestock and away from the pecking order of the other birds, but she’s also outside the range of the guardian dogs and flood lights.
